We are Canada’s business development bank and the only financial institution dedicated exclusively to entrepreneurs.
Our mission is to help create and develop strong Canadian businesses through financing, advisory services and indirect financing, with a focus on small and medium-sized enterprises.
Through our subsidiary—BDC Capital, we also offer a full spectrum of specialized financing, including venture capital, equity as well as growth and business transition capital.

Corporate governance
BDC's mandate is enacted in the Business Development Bank of Canada Act, passed in July 1995.
BDC is governed by an independent Board of directors, which ensures the highest standard of corporate governance practices.
- Various committees assist the Board of directors in fulfilling its oversight responsibilities. The Board has also established governance practices to help Board members perform their duties.
- The management team executes the business strategy and oversees the day-to-day operations of BDC.
Corporate plan summary
BDC is required to submit an annual five-year corporate plan to the Canadian government outlining its objectives and expected performance.
